Planning for an Emergency Loss of Heating in Winter

You can never be too prepared when it comes to keeping your household safe in case your furnace, heat pump, or radiant heating system fails on you during the chilliest day or night of the year. This is a particular worry if you have a home with infants, elderly, or infirm people. So while it is still fall, take some time to lay out preparations for what to do in case of a broken heating system.

First, Keep the Number for an Emergency Technician Handy

In other words, keep our number handy! We provide 24/7 emergency service for HVAC troubles. We can’t teleport to you, but if you call us as soon as the problem with your heater starts, we’ll be there soon to help out.

If You Have a Gas Furnace, Shut Off the Gas

This is a smart precaution to help prevent any carbon monoxide leaks from a broken gas furnace.

Close All Windows Securely and Seal Doorways

You want your home to be as airtight as possible to trap heat from escaping. Make sure there are no air leaks around any of the windows. And close the drapes as well, since they provide an extra barrier to trap heat.

Do You Have a Fireplace? Then Fire It Up!

Here’s a chance to make that decorative fireplace into a major heating source. It you have a wood-burning or gas-powered fireplace, you can get it going and have at least one room of your house warmed up nice and cozy. Move people with sensitivities to cold into this room.

Close Off Unused Rooms

This will keep heat from dissipating into areas of the house where it isn’t necessary to provide heat.

Start Baking!

Now is the time to make those cookies! Why? Well, because cookies are delicious. But it’s also an excuse to run the stove, which provides immense amount of heat to the house.
