Why You Need to Schedule Maintenance for Your Furnace

When it comes to keeping homes warm during the winter, the furnace has been the most popular choice for many years. Even with other advances in heating technology over the last few decades, gas-powered furnaces remain the most common type of residential heaters. If you home has a gas line, then it’s almost a certainty that you have a gas-powered furnace to take care of your winter warmth.

Before the cold weather arrives, you must arrange for a maintenance visit for your furnace from an HVAC professional. There are a number of reasons that a furnace needs this annual service:

  • To keep it safe: Gas furnaces are not inherently dangerous, but they can pose a risk of combustible and toxic gas leaks if they are not properly cared for. During maintenance, a technician will check to see that the furnace doesn’t have cracked heat exchangers or other places where gas leaks might occur. You should have few worries about the safe operation of your furnace if you have it inspected each fall.
  • To keep it efficient: Using natural gas to heat a home is cost-effective, since it’s a less expense energy source than electricity, oil, or propane. But a furnace will lose its energy efficiency every year that it skips maintenance, and in only a few years you might find yourself paying 25% more to heat your home than you should.
  • To prevent emergency breakdowns: The last type of heating emergency that you will want to deal with is a furnace that abruptly shuts down during one of the coldest days of the year. Maintenance will help stop this from happening by catching repair needs before they can become serious.
  • To give it a long service life: Most gas furnaces will last from 15 to 20 years. However, a furnace will only reach this goal if it receives maintenance to reduce wear and tear from use. Without this care, a furnace’s components will rapidly deteriorate, and it may not even make it to 10 years.
